Hey pals! Opening up a thread in comments here for a new weekly post I want to write for you all in which I “well, actually” a topic that is frequently misunderstood (or deliberately misrepresented). Think of those sexist blokes at the pub (or at work) who claim the wage gap isn’t real, or who argue that women’s biological design is to nurture. Or what about the ding dongs who argue men built everything? Boy, are they silly! Especially when you learn about how the roads in Rome were constructed.
This is to help with all the times you know someone is factually wrong, but you don’t actually have the factual argument to prove it. With my help, you can “well, actually” them into the sun!
“Well, Actually” will be posted to subscribers every Wednesday. I’ll do both a written response, and record me reading it too for people who prefer to listen. This is just the first step in me motivating myself out of late stage capitalist depression to actually have a routine, particularly with producing content in this community.
I’m also opening up Fridays for Dear Clementine style advice, again for subscribers only - you can send me any advice questions you want answered to DMs here.
Lastly, I feel that amidst it all I might actually need to do something fun to bring some level of joy to my life again. I’m open to suggestions on what you might like, but I was thinking I could bring back my movie deep dives. I have enough on file that I can share one a week for those who missed them the first time around (or want to revisit). Is it weird to share work I’ve already done?
If you’re not yet a subscriber, you can become one by signing up today! As the button above says, for less than the price of one coffee per week, you can get access to all my paywalled content and join the amazing DC community of like minded besties.
Love Clem x
It is not weird at all to share work you have already done! Please do so! I only discovered your work a couple of months ago, and have almost finished listening to your "Dear Clementine" podcast episodes - what an incredible body of work! I cannot begin to describe how much those episodes mean to me. My daughter is in Australia for a gap year (we live in South Africa) and is bringing your books to me when she returns as they aren't available here. I've read the e-version of "I Don't" but I want all your books to take up actual physical space on my bookshelf. All this to say - please be encouraged. My three daughters are in their teens and I feel so thankful to be able to introduce them to your work at this critically important stage in their lives. (And my husband!!!!)
I have been gathering evidence to put into a handy "well actually" booklet I'm making for my brother, so this is very exciting news. Disappointed but unsurprised that the United Nations Human Development Programme stated in their most recent report that Global Gender Equality has not improved in the last decade, and that 90% of the world are still negatively biased against women. We need to start Well Actuallying women too. I call people on their sexist language regularly and am met with dismissal or hostility.
Why are we so angered by facts????
