I’ve blocked that Caz woman. She’ll say it’s because she disagreed with me and I don’t like that and am stropping but the truth is that she is regularly rude, patronising and cunty and frankly $2.50 a week does not entitle someone to that.
I think you get criticism because you simplify history & make it fit into a box you’ve constructed, discarding facts that may not support your argument. I get it, you’re not a historian or geo-political academic. You’re a provocateur.
Personally I don’t like magic. Magical thinking.
Btw Germany didn’t exist before the 20th century :P :D (I’m a stickler for accuracy - sorry if you find that patronising - if we lived in the Middle Ages I’m sure you’d consider me a witch!)
Anyway, Hutton is an excellent read.
The best Podcast to listen to is The Rest Is History - I’m sure there are insights into Witchcraft in some episodes.
Clementine does research to inform her writing. She’s not saying she’s writing as a historian, but using history to discuss human behaviour and oppression, how to understand the current war in Palestine in the context of our world.
I’m sure not that many people in Australia know the history of the country of Germany and its various names throughout the centuries, so it makes sense to refer to the area with it’s current country name. (After all we refer to Australia as Australia and its only been called that for a few hundred years by the invading country).
I would class this type of ‘magic’ as psychological abuse by the sounds of it.
It’s interesting though because scientific reasoning has been shown to be biased and unscientific sometimes, especially historically. Some ‘scientific reasoning’ has been proven to be incorrect and unscientific and yet still is commonly referred to as accurate.
So it’s a bit like magic, depends how it’s used!
I’m definitely a fan of science though, love Dr Karl!
My criticism of magic is that it is exactly magical thinking that informed persecution of people in the first place . It’s not until scientific reasoning could explain certain phenomena that laws against persecution were passed.
Mystical thinking has caused a lot of destruction, an example would be Nazi paganism.
As an Atheist I would class Abrahamic religions in this category too. From a psychological viewpoint I think people often use things like astrology to classify people (I think everyone has had the experience of a person asking ‘what’s your star sign’) & perhaps judge or as a lazy crutch for things out of our control.
In my work as a therapist I’ve seen the traps people can get into & have had to help people peel away layers of magical thinking that has kept them in a fantasy world so I’m coming from a certain perspective. Ive known people who have played ‘spells’ & then become very paranoid & distrusting of others. I’ve personally seen it used to hold power over others but this has been demonstrated through out history too.
I do participate in personal rituals, a very human thing, but ‘practicing magic’ ? I guess it’s such a spectrum for interpretation!

PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!! FREE PALESTINE!! 🇵🇸 ✊

Have you read Ronald Hutton?

It doesn’t at all surprise me that someone who thinks like you doesn’t like magic.

Personally, I believe in the magic of people.
As for ‘Germany’ yes you’re right! I get very nit picky!!
& I believe in the good (the creative, the compassion, the humour, the….!!) in people (perhaps that’s your definition of magic?) 🐞

I can understand exactly your point, thank you.
